Utah falls to Cal in overtime as Utes finish Pac-12 basketball play 0-9 on the road

Berkeley, Calif. • In a potential preview of a first-round game at the Pac-12 Tournament in 10 days, Utah and Cal did play the cleanest contest on Saturday afternoon, but at least it was exciting. Big games from Timmy Allen and Both Gach ultimately went for naught as Utah closed another tough weekend on the road, as part of a forgettable season of road trips, with an 86-79 overtime loss to the Golden Bears at Haas Pavilion. The loss leaves Utah at 0-9 in Pac-12 road games for the season. The Utes are the first conference team to do that since Oregon State and Washington both did it in 2017. Gach (19 points, 7-for-11 shooting) fouled out with 3:35 to play in overtime after what was his best showing in almost two months. He spent much of the game with the ball in his hands, slashing to the rim and making the right plays to set up teammates. On the offensive possession after he fouled out, carless dribbling led to a turnover. A choppy offensive possession followed, and Cal pounced. U...

Yoeli Childs leads way as BYU tops Pepperdine, earns No. 2 seed in WCC tourney

No. 17 BYU went to Malibu expecting a battle against Pepperdine in Saturday’s regular season finale, but Yoeli Childs took it upon himself to make sure the Cougars still came out on top. The senior scored a career high 38 points on 63% shooting from the field to lead BYU to an 81-64 win over the Waves. BYU spoiled Pepperdine’s senior night festivities as the Cougars rolled into their ninth straight win and improved to 24-7 overall, 13-3 in league play. With the win, BYU locked up the No. 2 seed at the West Coast Conference tournament and earned a triple-bye into the semifinals. Prior to Saturday’s game, BYU had split its games (5-5) at Firestone Fieldhouse since joining the WCC. Before leaving for the game, coach Mark Pope acknowledged that BYU has found it difficult to play there – and this game proved no different. Pepperdine set the pace in the first half, getting on the board first and immediately recovering from a 13-2 BYU run with a 6-0 run of their own. While BYU did a good...

RSL plays to scoreless draw against Orlando City in season opener

Orlando, Fla. • Real Salt Lake knew it wouldn’t have its strongest starting 11 against Orlando City to begin the 2020 season. And it knew that would probably be the case for at least the first couple of games as it waited for some attacking players to return to full fitness after suffering injuries in the preseason. But starting in the 60th minute of RSL’s 0-0 draw against the Lions, the team’s lineup started looking more like it should once its main players can provide big minutes. Forward Corey Baird entered in the 60th minutes, Justin Meram came in 10 minutes later, and Giuseppe Rossi culminated the changes 10 minutes after that. In all, RSL played the final 10 minutes with an attacking four of Rossi, Meram, Baird and midfielder Albert Rusnák. Once they all saw the field together, Salt Lake got in the attacking third of the field more and created more corner kicks. Meram and Rossi in particular showed their attacking instincts, getting on the ball and pushing up looking to make ...

Peter Metcalf: Bloomberg would honor Wallace Stegner’s vision for the West

Image
Utah is blessed to have some of the most diverse, spectacular and iconic landscapes in America, and we who live here think of ourselves as their stewards. There is a sanctity in protecting our land and our landscapes. These federal public lands belong to all Utahns — and to every American. The current administration is prioritizing gas, oil, mineral and ranching interests over everything else. Nothing else matters: Not the watershed, or recreation, or hunting, or fishing, or clean air, or climate change (which Donald Trump denies even exists). Our environmental protections are being gutted, putting the health and well being of our citizens at risk. The assault on our stewardship, of our life-supporting, God-given assets, has been quick and brutal. New BLM plans have been drafted and deployed without adequate opportunity for study or public input, and the greater community involvement that has occurred has been a charade. The take downs of Grand Staircase and Bears Ears national mo...
