I live on a county road near the evacuation perimeter of what is now Colorado’s largest wildfire. Just a few days ago, the sheriff’s deputy was outside, his lights flashing red-blue-red, giving my house a strobe light effect. He was directing traffic as people fled the mountain with trailers filled with cattle and horses and goats and belongings. The wind was roaring, first one direction and then another, which is why this fire blew up again. The Cameron Peak Fire has been burning for two months — a long two months — leaving me and most of my neighbors with a hacking cough and guts that feel like they’re filled with clay. When we get the occasional blue sky day, I’m so relieved that I play hooky from work and walk up this county road, getting in exercise while I can, trying to clear my head while I can, obligations be dammed. A 13-year-old boy died after being hit by a vehicle in West Jordan on Thursday, police said. West Jordan Police Sgt. J.C. Holt said the call came in around 6:30 a.m. Holt said it appears the boy was trying to cross Redwood Road to go to school. He said West Jordan Middle School is close to where the boy was hit. The boy was struck while running across the road, said Holt. He said the driver tried to avoid hitting the boy but was not able to take action in time to avoid the collision. The boy died because of his injuries. The area where the collision occurred is not well-lit and does not have a crosswalk, Holt said. A Halloween Day groundbreaking officially launched construction of the Taylorsville Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Apostle Gerrit W. Gong, who emerged more than two weeks ago from quarantine after contracting COVID-19 , presided at the small-scale, socially distanced ceremony. “Gathered in these times, in person and via technology, we acknowledge and rejoice with faithful generations, including in historic ‘over Jordan’ communities, who have, here at heart, made this valley home,” the 66-year-old Gong prayed in dedicating the 7.5-acre site at 2603 W. 4700 South, according to a Saturday news release . “We celebrate the continuing legacy and promise of their righteous lives and examples.” Gong, the faith’s first Asian American apostle, attended the groundbreaking with his wife, Susan, who the church has reported also experienced “very mild symptoms” from the coronavirus earlier in October. Facebook deleted Utah Business Revival’s group on the social media platform Saturday morning, according to Eric Moutsos, the group’s organizer. Utah Business Revival, which Moutsos said reached 25,000 members, has sponsored protests in recent months against COVID-19 restrictions. In June, they held a concert attended by hundreds of people with country singer Collin Raye in Cedar City after the group was rejected twice by Utah cities worried about the spread of the coronavirus. They have also held events in support of law enforcement . Moutsos said Saturday that Facebook did not provide a reason why Utah Business Revival’s group was shut down. He said he tried to log on and it was gone.
